Great experience. We were eight people, and they sat us pretty close to our reservation time. A great and leisurely Spanish dinner.
Table Service? What Table Service?
Cafe Espanol is only good if you are goin gto sit at the bar and eat and drink. Otherwise, you will waste an entire evening trying to get water, order your food or pretty much do anything related to being at a restaurant. We had to flag down the waiter for water, food, drinks, more water, the bill, to pick up the bill and to bring back the credit card. The food was ok, though not worth dealing with the terrible service.

This was our second visit to this restaurant. We love tapas and for the most part were not disappointed, however it did not quite live up to our expectations after our earlier visit. Service was a bit hit and miss this time. Sangria was wonderful!
Could not have been better! My husband's birthday was truly an occasion!
Stil a good value
Continues to be an excellent value and the food is consistently good The Sangria is great
A Classic Village Spanish Throwback
This place fits you like your best sweater or your favorite jeans. These guys know exactly what they are doing and there is a reason this place has been around since 1976. One of the best values in New York for a good food and good prices in excellent quantity, cozy yet buzzy environment, good inexpensive wine list and all served by savvy, professional Spanish waiters who have all been there forever. This is one of our go-to places in NYC where we know we're going to get an amazing value experience every time, in a city not really known for restaurant value. Just go.
Definitely a good choice for a family outing!
We made our first visit to Cafe Espanol as a family - 5 persons - for Mom's birthday. It was a perfect choice for the occasion. Very good food, generous portions and authentic cuisine. We have already recommended it to friends. Our daughter goes to NYU, not too far away. Would be a very good choice for date night for NYU students.
Amazing and Great-Priced Food!!!
The food was amazing and the staff are both accommodating and professional. I'm so happy that my friend told me about this place.
Cafe Espanol is good for groups, but...
I was able to bring a huge group to Cafe Espanol very easily. They had a nice large private space that accommodated all 15 of us. Ordering with a group was easy because we got the prix fixe tapas menu. The food was okay but not spectacular and I've been to better tapas places. The white sangria was more like sprite with some wine, but it was fine. Certain tapas plates were very good like the baby lamb chops, but all in all our group found the place lacking. I wouldn't really go back when there are so many other places you can go to. If you are in the area or want something easy this place is fine, and ditto if you want an okay place to bring a big group.
Food never fails!
This was my 3rd time eating here and the food is authentic and absolutely delicious. We ordered seafood, paella and steak and everything was fresh and prepared to our liking. They make their own sangria and it is fabulous.

Tapas are delicious and so is the passion fruit sangria!
Have been here several times and consistently the food is very good, the prices are very fair and the service is great. The meatballs and Spanish omelet apps were good, the Octopus appetizer was amazing (must have). For main course, I had the seafood mariscada in green sauce and it was tasty. Good offering of seafood and over the yellow rice it was a very filling meal. I think they could add a bit more flavor to the green sauce (a little more garlic maybe) but overall very good and reasonably priced. BTW, pitcher of Sangria is a must as well.

Excellent meal and wonderful sangria. We had about 15 items from the tapas menu and we were satisfied with almost all of them. Variety provided something for everyone. The servers were attentive and allowed us to spend a couple hours enjoying our meal.
Great place. It is small and low profile but the food is excellent, delicious paella .... mussels....good variety of seafood cooked Spanish style. Great bread. The service is excellent, all staff is bilingual. Desserts were also a great closure.
We eat here several times a year when we are in NYC. The food is fantastic. The paella is so good--I always get that. They have white asparagus as a starter and it's really good. Sometimes it is really crowed and then could be a little noisy cause it's not a big place, but it's never bad. The lighting is soft and nice. Go there. You will love it
Never a Disappointment
This is one of our favorite restaurants. We enjoy the tapas as well as dinners. Save room for dessert.
Café Espanol is always on point. The paella and sangria are amazing!
Was nice except for the food
The food here was very bad. It might be because it was Christmas and they were busy. We had the Lobster and other seafood it was very soft and mushy was cooked many hours before and stayed in water. I liked the location and the people but the food was real bad.
Definitely very nice experience.
Very good service. The food is delicious and moderate prices. The manchego fried cheese, octopus and paella with lobster very well cooked. The waiters were very kind to sing the birthday to our friend.
A Crowded Friday Night
I didn't care for the stuffing in the Stuffed Lobster and the lobster meat lacked flavor. Spanish potatoes were potato chips and not particularly fresh. Lobster in Garlic sauce was a better choice as the garlic sauce was very tasty.
Rushed service, delicious food
BEST SANGRIA I HAVE EVER TRIED. I've been here a few times before this year. The food is and was amazing as always. My girlfriend and I sat at 9:30pm on Thrusday, and I understand that it is the second half of the night and that everyone is trying to go home. However, I felt like the experience was rushed, we were not even done with the salads when the dressing was taken from the table, also the plate of our steak, which had all the sauce FYI, was taken from the table as we picked the steak from it. I love the food and will definitly go back but being rush like this really changes the experience a lot.

You can't go wrong with a good tapas restaurant and we found this restaurant to fit in that category. All was very good though we found the rice in the paella tapa to be under cooked. The sangria was wonderful.

Perfect as always I've been going here every thanksgiving for the last 15 years and it's always great thank you.
One of my favorite's
The tapas at Cafe Espanol were great; and the paintings on the wall left me feeling like I was sitting in a small Castillan villa. The seasoning used with every dish really complimented the flavors of the food. We ordered mushrooms, mussels, patatas bravos (covered in a delicious sauce), lamb chops (very tender), chorizo. The waiters even sang a beautiful birthday song for our friend. Loved it!
Fun & Friendly
The tapas selection is outstanding- especially any of the seafood a la plancha. Outstanding octopus & calamari. The happy birthday rendition is a special surprise!
(Mostly) Great Tapas!
I brought my mother here for dinner on her birthday. I was recommended here by someone for their tapas and I thought it might be interesting to try a variety of plate samples. I was pleasantly surprised at some of the plates, especially the grilled calamari. That one is fantastic! The meat tapas were a little on the dry side though. I tested the filet mignon and lamb and both came out pretty tough. Service was great and the waiter was extremely kind to us and offered many suggestions as it was our first time there. Overall, great experience and well worth it. Just avoid the meat dishes...
Terrible service. Mediocre food.
Don't bother with house red. Marques de Riscal by bottle...Very good Rioja.
Best Pulpo(octopus) I have ever eaten. This is the place for tapas in NYC. The varieties of tapas are enormous and each is great. Will return next trip to NYC. Very accomodating for handicap which is sometimes a rarity in NYC- easpecially in older buildings
If youve never been, this place is a must. Been coming her for over a decade and they never disappoint...food excellent, sangria wonderful, wait staff very friendly and good with kids

I was there with friends and while we didn't oohh and ahhh over the food because we were just having fun and catching up, we have no complaints whatsoever. Staff is great, attentive, and the food is always great and plentiful. I love this place.
This was the second time in less than one month that we dined at Cafe Espagnol. The first experience was very different from the current. At the first, the food was great, the service left a great deal to be desired....brusque, nasty, rushing us through every course. We decided, having had many good experiences there, to give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt and give them one more chance. I alerted the hostess to our problems the last time and she truly got the message. Our experience with the food was the same.....consistently good and high quality. The service improved astronomically. The servers were courteous, gave us time to enjoy each course and were clearly concerned with our enjoyment. I would definitely recommend Cafe Espagnol for the food. Just be on your guard to make sure that the service remains just as consistent.

The shrimps were overlooked. The paella was wet and salty. The noise was high especially when they have the music on loud. When we mentioned the Paella was wet and salty to the waiter. He did not care and just walked away.

Great food…dreadful service
This was my first time here and I loved the food. The service was terribly rushed. The server practically tore the partially finished food from the table. Further, the server piled plates on the table and made the dining experience a disappointment. I can't stress how good the food was. I don't expect I'll go back again.

Cafe Espanol B-day dinner
I went here with 6 people for my birthday and it was delicious. Everyone was able to get what they wanted. Some of us just got Tapas while others shared paella. Either way- the food was delicious. We sat inside and were kind of on our own which was nice- the next time I might opt to sit outside. We loved the over-enthusiastic dessert waiter- he was soooo cuuuutttteeee!!!
We were celebrating our cousin's birthday, we truly enjoyed the cuisine; mariscada, lobster tail with shrimps, mussels, and delicious sangria, excellent service. Will recommend it highly. Thanks
