Ashoka Indian Cuisine Ratings and Reviews
Best indian dinner I've ever had
Had a wonderful dining experience yesterday at this great little place. My friend likes spicy food and was very happy with how hot his dish was and I on the other hand do not like spicy food at all, flavor yes, but hot and spicy, no. I didn't even order from the menu, I just told our server Maria I wanted something vegetarian and not spicy and she brought me the best Indian dinner I've ever had. I can't recommend this restaurant enough, 5 stars.

Food was fine but the server was very awkward and made a lot of excuses for the slowness. Turns out the server was also the cook. The decor is also outdated and cramped.
Excellent place for Indian food. Family ...
Excellent place for Indian food. Family owned and operated they take care of you as they do their own.
We love the food at this Indian gem. Simply some of the best in the City. Eggplant is the best ever. But if the chef doesn't appear, and the staff cannot even pour a beer alone, what's the point? I suggest you call the restaurant before starting out, and verify they are open and cooking.
The OWNERSHIP are no-shows
As other reviewers have noticed, we arrived for a reservation at 6:15 to find the restaurant shut tight. We wandered up and down the block a couple of times to see if maybe they would simply be late but they still weren't there, so we gave up and went elsewhere
Friendly neighborhood Indian food
Was a tasty dinner for 3 with helpful friendly family members waiting on us.
Simple restaurant with very excellent food.
We were looking for a Indian restaurant close to where we happened to be coming back from the Presidio. When we arrived there was no hostess so we seated ourselves instead of leaving. Glad we stayed. The place is very quaint but the food was great. It is a place we would go back to again. That's the best praise is that we would go there again.
Place wasn't even open!
What kind of place takes reservations and is not even open?! We walked down to the restaurant and it was locked up and no one was there. It was 6:30 PM on a Thursday. They wasted our time so I'll never go back.
Poor service, good food.
I don´t usually rate places, but I don´t know what happened in this place. The food was ok, but the service was too bad. It´s a pity because the local looks good.
Charming with excellent food
It's a tiny restaurant with great charm. Very nice lighting, high ceilings, only small tables( that's great) and a little kitchy bar, which we didn't mind at all. Everything from service, to ambiance, to food and price was fabolous. We were surprised that this little gem was almost empty, which didn't bother us at all either. Therefore, we were able to have a nice conversation and didn't have to scream, as it is sometimes in other restaurants.
We'll be back!
A nice small place, the food was excellent and service was fast and friendly.
Our food was surprisingly
Our food was surprisingly well-seasoned given that the restaurant is tiny and doesn't look like anything much from the street. Not your ordinary Indian takeaway joint but you'd never know it.
Very small but high quality
Very small but high quality food. Owner was very helpful, good recommendations and fast service!

We went on time to our reservation, but the restaurant was close. No one answer the phone number listed.
This is perhaps the best Indian
This is perhaps the best Indian food we have had in San Francisco. For my taste a bit spicier would be preferred, but it was certainly spicy. The eggplant was the best, although the lamb sauce was just wonderful.
We were the only party eating
We were the only party eating there for lunch on a sunny Saturday. The owner (who is also the chef?) was friendly. We had the goat curry and the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Tandoori chicken. The plates are small for the price and, although I guess the area is more expensive in general, 3 pieces of thigh meat does not equal 1/2 chicken which is how the Tandoori chicken was described. The curries were delicious, not the flavors I expected, but also not spicy at all. Naan was great, but $2.50 for 1 piece?? Overall, can't fault the food but I'll still go elsewhere next time.
We shared dishes, Palak Paneer,
We shared dishes, Palak Paneer, creamed spinach Indian style and Champ Tazadar, grilled lamb chops with fabulous seasoning and of course we could not pass up the Garlic Naan. A great meal before going to the Palace of Fine Arts for a concert. And they deliver and offer a discount for take out pick up. If I lived in the Marina District I would on it. Very good dining experience.
a real disappointment, my
a real disappointment, my husband chose this restaurant for his birthday dinner because we greatly respect the historical figure, the emperor Ashoka, and every aspect of this restaurant was ordinary or sub-par.nlog even cheap and cheerful
Not the most memorable Thanksgiving
Not the most memorable Thanksgiving dinner ever, but I love Indian food, so I looked forward to the new experience. We ordered samosas for starters, and I thought they were terrific, but my partner was middling. On a whim, we ordered two different paneer dishes (palak and masala), but had trouble finding the paneer in the spinach. The naan was probably the weakest part of the meal (food-wise). Both the regular and garlic naan were dry and bland. The chicken tikka masala was very nice with lots of tender chicken pieces and plenty of masala. By far the worst part of our experience was the service. Even though there weren't many patrons, our waiter spent most of his time either on his phone, or preparing to-go orders.
For the authentic Indian cuisine
For the authentic Indian cuisine connoisseur. Every dish absolutely delicious. The chicken tikka masala is other-worldly. Best Indian food in SF.
