Good, but not great. The hostess said the best dishes were the ones I don't eat . I'm low-carb so they may have great Spanish tortillas and paella, but I wouldn't know. The cheese plate and chorizo iberico were fine, but nothing special. The machego flambeado was the best item we had and it was really good. Gambas al ajillo were ok, as were the espinacas. I probably will go elsewhere next time.

I have not gone to Alegrias for a few years. I've tried other Spanish tapas restaurant and although more pricey, the experience and the food still doesn't compare to Alegrias. I've brought two friends who were new and loved everything we had ordered. The service was good. There was a bit service issue in terms of asking if we needed any more drinks or how the food was but not much to really be a big deal. I'm glad I went and missed the sangria.
Best paella in San Francisco
We know this place for over 15 years and is one of our favorite restaurants for special ocasions. Our favorite dish paella a la valenciana is always delightful and while we're waiting we enjoy some "tapas", we recomended the goat cheese is delicious and if you like sangria the one they prepare here is very good!

All is good except they serve rabbit meat on the menu. Many households consider rabbits as pets so sadly I won't return anymore.
Food was barely warm and seemed like an afterthought. Disappointed especially for how much we spent and how good the reviews said it was.
Exceptional Traditional Tapas & Wine
The food was excellent. Traditional and perfectly delivered. Wine: Don Jacobo - Rioja - Amazingly fruity, smooth, and well balanced. Ask for a steak (not on the menu) came out perfect and well seasoned. Iberico Ham - Whoa, better than prosciutto, less salty and more flavor. Manchego Flambe - One of the best dishes, cheesey goo that is lit up on fire and tastes like it was toasted! Fried Potatoes - Crispy and cut the perfect size for mouthful of savory potatas!
Great tapas at reasonable prices
Quality of food was great. Seemed like you were dining in Spain. Other reviews were right on: from the outside, you might not be attracted to this place. Similarly, the inside is ok but not special. But the service was great. Definitely worth going to.

I really like this restaurant and it's one of my favorites. I brought a new friend and she was impressed with the flavor of the food and its serving sizes. She specially enjoyed the sangria and will come again to tastes other tapas
Great Tapas Place
I wouldn't have picked this place judging from the appearance outside. After walking inside, it looked fine but still did little to reassure me. Only because of the reviews were we comfortable enough to try it. As it turns out they do a very good job with the food and service. The prices were reasonable and we all enjoyed the food. A highlight were the Asparagus and the Mussels dishes. I didn't care for the shrimp dish, the shrimp were small and the flavor was dull.
We were tempted by the paella but instead went with a selection of tapas, all of which were delicious. The service was attentive and the whole experience was very nice.

Excellent Tapas retaurunt
I have tried many of the noteworthy tapas restaurants in SF and this one is far and away the best . The food was exceptional in quality and preparation and the presentation was delightful. I was with a reasonable sized group, so had the opportunity to taste many of their dishes. The atmosphere was very pleasant - white table clothes and many photos on the walls. The only thing less than perfect was the service. The waiter was nice and took good care of us, but he could not understand the concept that we had 5 people who wanted to try each dish so please portion each dish accordingly, and adjust the price accordingly. It made it awkward to divide servings of 4 or 3 portions with our guests from Japan. He also recommended too many dishes, although their prices were quite affordable.

We went for the Valentine's Day special pre fixed menu. Everything was very good. We got asparagus, rabbit stew, shrimp, lobster croquettes, and flan for desert. If I were to choose one of those to recommend id go with the lobster croquettes.

Absolutely wonderful, delicious, classic Spanish food. And generous portions. It's a trip to Spain without traveling far.
A Zappa Night
We booked Alegrais, for an quick dinner and take away for the band last weekend. It was a wonderful feast with plenty of taste dishes...And the deserts were a huge hit with the band after the performance! Nice local family environment that has not changed nor do we want it to for the past 20 years...keep it up? enjoy your favorite tapas

the best spanish resturant
I would be hard to find a better Spanish restaurant that is so warm and hospitable towards every dining guest. I always feel like family when I am here.

Wonderful dining experience. Food was delicious, excellent service with the highlight being when the owner/chef came to our table for an entertaining chat. Perfect atmosphere for what I was after. Sangria was awesome!! Thanks Alegrias.
A pleasant surprise!
This restaurant was a gem of a place. The servers were attentive and well versed on their menu. We had the Paella which absorbed every bit of seafood flavor and complemented the Hot Tapas very well. The server assisted with a choice wine "Mala Vida", complementing our dishes and the elegance of the evening. Definitely will revisit when the opportunity arises...!

We had a great visit! Food was wonderful. Everything was great! We especially liked the sausages with apples/cider, potato omelet, and various cheeses. It was fun to get lots of things to share.
Excellent service, delicious food!
Really nice ambience, food was really good. We had a Paella a la Valenciana, tortilla a la espanola, espinacas a la catalana and sangria, every single one of the plates were very savory.

We've been eating here on occasion for years and really like the food. Sadly, on this last visit, we did not get our correct order. When we asked about missing dishes, the waiter shrugged and said they must have gone to another table. It was clear that the waitstaff was being lazy or inept since it was not very busy at the time.

Best spanish resturant I have ever been to !!
If I could give Alegrias 10 stars I would. From the atmosphere to the food and the warm family vibe Alegrias is a diamond on a gem scale. Simply put the best Spanish restaurant I have ever eaten at.

We loved our tapas dinner and delicious Spanish wine! What a fabulous restaurant! We felt like we were back in Mallorca again. Thank you for a memorable evening! Can't wait to return to try the paella!
Night out in SF
I really ended up enjoying the food and recommend it for a casual group. I did not care for the ambience much, but was nicely surprised by the food.

Great paella. I just went to Spain and thought the iberico ham was just average but everything else was wonderful. We will return.
Very, very nice evening!
I am not a huge tapas fan, but this sounded nice and it really was. The food was excellent, as was the service, and the overall experience was great. The outside looks a bit suspect, but inside was nicely appointed and not too crowded nor noisy. I don't think you can go wrong!
Nice cozy place
It was a very different place when we left than when we entered. We went in earlier in the evening and there were just a few people. It had a great ambiance and a very intimate feel, and was also a whole lot quieter than when we left. It's necessarily a bad thing, but it was just different - so, the noise level has really two answers. The food was very good, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We are vegetarians and there was a sufficiently good number of items to choose from. Only negative (if that) is that the price seems a bit steep for the portions. Generally, it is a great restaurant, and we will definitely be back
We were staying at a motel on Lombard St. and were looking for a place nearby that took reservations through OpenTable. Alegrias seemed like it would please the various tastes of our group and did it ever! We tried prawns, mussels, empanadillas (meat and vegetarian), spinach and olives. Everything was delicious! The sauce that the prawns came in was so good, I was tempted to lick the plate! Our waiter suggested an excellent wine and we all left very satisfied.
Delishesssssss! Not sure. Love, Love, Love their Sangria. The food is great too!
Love this place!
Such a great little spot off Lombard. The curb appeal has you questioning what you got yourself into but once you see the tapas, nothing else matters. The service was amazing! With each dish our small group ordered, we were taken to Spain with a bit of history on the dish and how it's part of the culture. Can't wait to go back here again. Great spot for catching up with old friends.
Request not Fulfilled
Overall, it was a very pleasant experience however, there was one minor problem. When I made my reservation on open table, I said that we had out-of-town guests and we wanted a nice table in the nice part of the dining room. There are two rooms in this restaurant, one in the front, which includes the bar, and the more formal dining room beyond this first one. Even though the first dining room is nice because it is dimly lit and romantic, it is still in the same space as the bar. I did not mention this to host as we were being seated because we had out of town guests and I did not want there to be any unpleasantries. However, we were not seated in the more formal room, Ashley since our reservations were relatively early, at 7 PM, and when we got there the restaurant so was still plenty, so there was no excuse that availability was limited. It turned out fine because our guest restaurant, but what more is a person supposed to do? I mean, I mentioned it open table reservation. Do we have to actually spell it out: no seating in the dining room that includes the bar. If we ever go back to this restaurant, I guess that's what we'll have to do.
Small quaint place for tapas.
The food was good.I especially enjoyed the Iberico ham(hard to find in the US).The tapas were good. The only complaint I had was the selections on the menu were limited. They need to have more items for being a tapas restaurant.
In the mood for Tapas and Paella
This is the best and tastiest Spanish restaurant in San Francisco! Everything we tried was cooked beautifully and tender. The chicken croquettes were creamy and crunchy to the bite as the mussels were flavorful and perfect to the bite! One of the specials were oxtail tapas was creamy saucy and falling off the bone. The four of us shared a main dish of delicious seafood paella, 4 glasses of red sangria. The night was perfect, we will go again and again....perfecto! Bravo to the chefs!!
great spanish food and not noisy
great spanish food and unlike so many restaurants these days not noisy so you can actually have a conversation. tapas makes it good for groups or families, but can still work out for couples.
