Ácenar Ratings and Reviews
Overlooking the Riverwalk
A nice Spring evening overlooking the Riverwalk. From the time my group walked in, the staff made us feel welcome. We had a group of seven and later eight, we were seated outside and taken care like I would normally expect from a high-end restaurant. Will definitely make this a regular.
Don't even bother to reserve here - Never Again!
Made a reservation two weeks in advance and asked for a booth inside and noted it was a 13th wedding anniversary celebration. Confirmed it a week before and STILL received a call the day of to "confirm the reservation". I confirmed the reservation for the second time and again requested the booth on the inside. The snarky girl stated they would, "see what they could do." Upon arrival, the hostess was completely clueless and looked like she would rather be anywhere but there. No booth ready and none available, no mention of our celebration. Had to settle sitting at a four top table at the very front entrance. We were dining with friends from out of town, so I didn't mention anything or complain. I even pointedly said goodbye to the hostess as we left and she looked like she was taken aback and miserable. I felt the food was very mediocre and the price of 110.00 for sub-par food was not justified. Never again."

Great place- wonderful cocktails, staff and food.
We made a reservation for 2 people through Open Table and when we arrived we were told we would have a 30-45 minute wait. When I advised we had a reservation we were rudely told that it didn't matter if we wanted to eat there we had to wait- which we did. Once we were seated it took over 2 hours to eat. The waiter came by infrequently- when we asked for tortillas they came 30 minutes after the meal was over. Once we were done, we waited 50 minutes for the check. We sent two other staff to track down our waiter, he never materialized. I went searching the restaurant for a manager and finally found the waiter and coaxed him back with the check. There was never any apologies or acknowledgement of the problem. The food was average and the drinks were watered down from sitting somewhere for too long before getting to us. So much potential and beautiful view but the experience was not one we will repeat.
I have been to Acenar previously and it was great. On this occasion I was meeting up with friends. The drinks were over priced as it was, and to be overcharged when I had not called a specific alcohol as well as line itemed for the mixer, talk about feeling fooled. My husband ordered a Margarita which the price isnt listed for small vs large was charged $22 for a margarita! NOT a great value! We were left with out a check in from our server who we couldnt find for 30 minutes and we were on a time crunch after all the nonsense for our 8pm show we had 6pm reservations. We also were sat in a corner of the restaurant which was hot and were privy to a restaurant meeting which took place at the next table not a could ambiance. Overall it was a poor experience, i spoke to the manager and he explained they were overwhelmed and did not prepare for the evening. He did take off my over detailed priced drinks but the damage was already done!

Nice location on the Riverwalk. Very good service. Good Mexican flavors with simple American twists. Tex-Mex, but not over the top. Very good salsa and fresh chips.
Good dinner spot pre-Cornyation
Four of us had a tasty meal at Acenar prior to attending Cornyation this week. Easy & reasonable cost for valet parking at Hotel Valencia. Short walk to the Empire Theatre. Chips & salsa were good as were the fish tacos I ordered. Good service. Since we went early the noise level didn't start getting too loud until we were ready to leave. Good place to eat downtown before an event.
Excellent margaritas and food
I was referred to this place for a dinner. When I joined a friend for lunch, she suggested the place for lunch. I discovered an incredible margarita menu and a very interesting food menu, with duck, goat and other specialties on the menu. The food did not disappoint. It was delicious. I will be back.

Short-rib and fish tacos were very good. Fish were second to short-rib because, although very fresh, they could have been seasoned a bit more.
Fun before Majestic
They can get you in and out in a big hurry (your choice) or you can stay for hours. Great food and fun environment. Loud but fun.

Excellent customer service in bar and dining room. Food was delicious. Kabobs, duck chalupas and queso was great. Nontraditional salsa but i wasnt really a fan of it. Was a little loud when the tableside guacamole carts would come by which was fairly often but overall the ambiance on the patio was perfect.
excellent food and atmosphere
acenar was a real treat since we drove from Austin for lunch there...absolutely worth it! food was great and location was great too!
Blend taste, very fatty
The service was great and friendly. Too bad that the food was not of the same quality. The meats were very fatty, and the taste was either blend or strange (the chicken). Will not go back.

A little touristy but to be expected as on Riverwalk. But tasty food- duck crepes terrific.
Good location on the Riverwalk.
Greeting waiter did not take my name for the reservation when we arrived quite early for our reservation. This ultimately resulted in finding a voice mail from the restaurant asking if we were going to show up or not upon return later than evening. I informed the staff I had a reservation and asked if he wanted my name, which he declined. There were no napkins or silverware on our table, and none appeared. I fetched silverware after about 15 minutes from another table. Salsa was good, queso dip excellent and good guacamole. Service was kinda slow. Oilcloth tablecloth had a rip where my glass rested. A sun umbrella was moved right next to my chair to provide shade for another table....it was crowding. Food was good, but overall, not someplace I would immediately recommend. Just too many stutters.
This place was AMAZING
This place was amazing. Best Mexican food I've ever eaten... artful! Great cocktails, best salsa... fantastic find.
The waiter (Tony) was superb. He gave us several drink and food suggestions, in detail, and not the priciest things on the menu. The food is not your usual Tex-Mex fare. Specialty dishes take front and center on the menu. The three of us ordered totally different selections and were all impressed. We could have each ordered three additional selections and would have been just as pleased. We've been many times and will continue to use this restaurant for special occasions.
An interestng take on Mexican food. Pleasant outside dining. Nice atmostphere and a vibrant feel. The food is good as is the service thought the service not so sincere.
Another success at Acenar
Acenar is always a treat. This time we were a party of 6 adults and one 10 month old. Drinks are imaginative and fresh. Food is consistently good. The din of noise somehow seemed to sooth the baby and she slept through the entire meal. Made-at-the-table guacamole is a must, as is the shrimp taco plate. Fish taco plate is also delish. We've never had a miss at Acenar - always a hit. My three favorite restaurants on the river are Acenar, Biga on the Banks, and Boudro's. These are in alphabetical order.
The best Tex Mex on the Riverwalk
Spent 3 weeks in town on business, and ate at all the top rated San Antonio Restaurants. This place and Luke are at the top of my list. Cutting edge Tex Mex cuisine, served with pride, at reasonable prices in a great venue on the Riverwalk. Had several awesome meals here. Don't miss the duck tostadas or the pork carnitas. Great fried oyster appetizer served on yucca chips. Excellent drinks. Maitre 'd stopped by both nights to check on our satisfaction. 5 out of 5 stars for Acenar. Pass right by the tourist places with Rio in the name, and come here if you want the best Tex Mex on the Riverwalk. No doubt about it! Can't wait to get back.
Best of the Best
Had luncheon here with my Niece on 2/27/16 and was in awe of not only the food but the service provided. Had the veggie enchilada and it should be at top of menu. It was the very best ever. BUT the most outstanding was the cheese sauce on top of it...It was so smooth, light and would make a PERFECT chip dip...especially for those of us who can no longer handle HOT/SPICY dips that are norm in today's facilities. The next best part of your place would be the staff...the young lady who was our server was considerate, polite, but not overbearing...something you rarely find these days...AND no one seemed to mind if we came early for reservation or stayed a tad longer than planned.. Definitely plan to return for a meal when we come back to town for IL DIVO in October if not sooner.
Have the duck crepes!
My wife and I went here on a Friday night. We are early 30s working professional's, we think of ourselfs as food critics but just between us. This restaurant is right on the river walk. The decor is upscale mordern spanish. We decided to eat outside as the weather was perfect. My wife ordered fish tacos , I had the duck crepes and the food was fantastic. The sides were noticeably well done, even the rice had an amazing flavor.,..Yeah rice. I was pretty blown away at the food quality. I recommend this to anyone, there were exactly zero children when we are at 830. It was perfect.
Good not great
Would still recommend, maybe a little overpriced for what you get. It does have a great view of the riverwalk. Our server was average, not what I would expect for a restaurant with this pricing.
Thrilled with the setting and the food!!
I was thinking it was going tone big tourist spot on the Rverwalk with average food. I was wrong!! Great food, diverse menu, great service and very affordable!
High end yet still identifiable Mexican food
Took a group of 15 there on a Thursday night. Fantastic service. Just a great place for a group. Service was timely. Food was so yum. Place was very busy our server still managed special requests. All in all a fantastic mid range priced experience
Amazing and Unique flavors
The smoky flavors in their salsa, guacamole, and other dishes make this food amazing and unique.
Good meal in scenic setting
Good tex-mex option on the scenic River Walk. Ample patio seating; indoor dining space, as well. Salsa was delicious! Service was attentive, but not disruptive.
Fastest service in history!
Even though I had a reservation I still had to wait. The speed of the service compensated for the wait. The food and drinks were amazing!!
Great local Tex-Mex on the Riverwalk
Come here just for the salsa, stay for all the other dishes. The salsa is an amazing blend of complex, rich flavors, paired with fresh chips. Fresh guacamole prepared tableside is memorable. Generous portions and fresh ingredients comprise the main courses, which are reasonably priced. Acenar is located on bustling Houston St. with a pleasant outdoor patio overlooking a quieter part of the Riverwalk.
Acenar is a great place to take friends and family who are visiting from out of town. The food is reliably good, with probably the best tableside prepared guacamole in the city. Try the duck chalupas! The cocktails are goooood! Plus, it is right on the Riverwalk without being in the middle of all of the traffic. It is a short walk to one of the riverboat cruise departure points. Oh, and I forgot to mention that they usually have valet parking available. It is a great spot for before going the theater or a concert.
Another Great Evening Alfresco
Acenar is always a sure bet. One of the best overall restaurants in San Antonio.
Good salsa! Great coconut margaritas!

There is little to recommend this restaurant. My advice is to avoid it.
We booked Acenar before we left San Diego and were very excited we did! Location on the River Walk, the food and service were all great. What a nice San Antonio welcome!
Not your ordinary Tex-Mex
My husband and I often go to Acenar for drinks and dinner before plays at the Majestic. When the weather is suitable, we can sit outside above the Riverwalk, or we can choose inside, where the ceiling is high and the noise is low. The food is Mexican, but this is not fast-food, run-of-the-mill Mexican. It is upscale, unique dining. If you've eaten at Lisa Wong's other restaurants, Rosario's, you know what I mean. We always come away happy, full and satisfied.
Excellent as always.
We ate here last Wednesday before seeing Kinky Boots at the Majestic Theatre. The service was outstanding, and our waiter was very attentive and explained several menu items we had questions about. The food was delicious. I ordered a steak with shrimp diablo. The steak was supposed to be 8 oz., it had to be between 12-14 oz. and was cooked to medium rare perfection. It has been a couple of years since we ate here but we will do so the next trip downtown since the menu is so varied and the prices are very reasonable.
Really enjoyed the evening. servers were excellent. Everyone including the hostess were pleasant and helpful.
It was ok but nothing over the top.
Their salsa was good as well as their quacamole. I had the oyster tacos which were good!
Great place with one detractor
Great place that we went to with a group of 8--had no wait at 630, although it got a bit busy later. The one and only thing we really disliked was the mariachi band playing that night. They were pushy, and constantly asking for tips before they would even play. So they kind of hung around our table requesting tips and only played one song after we all coughed up some cash. After that one song, they went off to the next song and repeated this process. So it seemed like they were just in it for money and one song before they ditched you. Not very nice. After clearing all the tables, the band left, presumably to go to another restaurant close by. It was the oddest experience I've ever had with a band at a restaurant, and it was not a pleasant experience. Other than that, the food is great, the margaritas divine, and the service friendly.
