We had one complaint. We get the barrel aged Old Fashioned at Jaspers in Austin and it is far superior to the same drink at Abacus. We would swear they are watering the drink down at Abacus....not cool.

We loved our dinner. We tried the lobster shooters as recommended by other reviewers. They were interesting but weren't that good. Steak, venison, pork tenderloin, scallops, and lobster roll were all perfect. The service was awesome and very attentive. We definitely enjoyed our family night out.

Our server was great. My wife had a Caesar salad and the ribeye while I had the lobster bisque and the filet of buffalo. We shared a side of asparagus. For desert we shared a piece of fudge cake with cookies and cream ice cream. Every bite of both meals was delicious.

Great place for a date
First time at Abacus and it will not be the last! Ryan our server was attentive and informative, but not over the top. Loved my Moscow Mule cocktail in the copper mug and according to my husband the local beer was great. As for food selections, my husband and I like small plates, so we ordered items that we could share. Everything was excellent! Looking forward to our return to Abacus.
Chef's Tasting . . . Delicious.
We had a 9-course chef's tasting dinner with wine pairings. The food was wonderful. The service close, but not quite. A couple of the courses were served too close together so we felt rushed. We were seated early for a 7 o'clock reservation and were finished about 9. We would have preferred the next course was not served until a few minutes after we'd each finished the wine that accompanied the previous course. I "chugged" a couple of really expensive wines. So that I didn't have multiple wine glasses in front of me at once. That said, we will eat there again.

Everything from the service, the atmosphere, the cocktails and most importantly the food was delicious perfection. Thoroughly enjoyed our experience here.
Dependable for quality and creativity. We have never been disappointed.

Great food, Little Overpriced, Slow Service
I've had 2 good experiences here and 1 negative. Overall the food is excellent, but not sure it's worth the price. The service was fairly slow as well. Sushi was excellent

Went there for my wife's birthday. We did the 5 course chef's tasting with wine pairing. The food was outstanding: the 2 fish dishes were superbly prepared and had amazing flavors. The meat dishes were good, although not as amazing as the fish. The presentation was artful. The wine pairings didn't work for some dishes, but overall the wines were great. Service could be vastly improved. Our first dish arrived after only a couple of sips of our cocktails. The wine arrived after our food. I barely put my fork down before my plate was whisked away, without being asked if I was done. The dinner just felt rushed. When you're doing a multi-course tasting, it should have a leisurely pace so that you have a little time to digest. Overall, the restaurant is worth a visit for the food alone. It won't disappoint.
one of the best
We love Abacus for a special dinner and always make it a place to take out of town visitors. The food options are always new and exciting, the service is the best and we never come away disappointed. Steve is one of the best servers in the city. He is the right amount of friendliness and professionalism. A pretty hard balance to find. All in all, Abacus is wonderful.
After a 30 minute wait for our table ( for which we had a reservation), the experience was delightful! The lobster shooters were amazing!

The food was great. The atmosphere was even better. We had a great server/Jose. Kent Rathbun was gracious and stopped at our table to chat a while. Celebrated Nekeba's 42nd birthday in 2016.
Best tasting menu
The tasting menu is a great way to try new things and things that you would never think to order. It is always delightful and delicious.
My husband and I usually sit at the bar as we are delighted with the bartenders there, specifically Jason. On this occasion we ate in the dinner room with another couple. Our waiter was not very friendly, lacked personality and just took our order. Very disappointing given the quality of the food, the prices and the atmosphere.

What an amazing find with very diverse and creative menu. We were a party of 5 and everyone can't wait to return.
Truly wonderful dining experience
This is one of the best meals we've had in Dallas so far - the food was as creative as it was delicious, the service was efficient but also very friendly, and overall it made for a relaxing and enjoyable night out. I'd love to go again.

This is one of the "must go to" restaurants in Dallas. And rightly so. We had the Valentine's Day select menu: 4 courses and a palate chaser in the middle. For the first course, the buffalo meat ball appetizer with a pear purée was the perfect mix of hearty and subtle. The salad course was a delicious mix of baby greens, cranberries and pine nuts over a purred cheese mixture. It was an excellent balance of herb, berry and nutty flavor and texture. I loved the palette chaser, a soda made of berries that was lighter than sorbet but not as sweet. For the main course I chose grilled sea bass in glass noodles. The bass was perfectly done and delivered with a topping of pesto and nuts that added a grassy taste to the fish. The glass noodles were a disappointment. The sauce was oily and overpowered the light delicate noodles with an oily earthy flavor. Maybe it's just me but the oily sauce was a bad choice. I would have loved a chili oil but this was flat and fishy. Avoid the dish The final course a lively chocolate mousse pyramid paired with a berries and cakes was a remarkable end to a lovely meal. The dessert made up for a lot of foibles in the main course. Overall, the dinner was a work of art. I was so impressed. And by the way, the service is beyond wonderful. Every nuance of service was carefully thought out. The service was first class.
Great food and atmosphere
My husband and I went here for V-Day dinner. It was great because, for once we can have dinner and hear each other without there being too much noise in the restaurant. Other "hot" restaurants around town stuff people into the place for V-Day and it is too loud and crowded. The food was really great, loved it! We were seated on time, which was also a big plus!

Kent is a culinary visionary who excels in providing a menu that is constantly changing. Pure genius. Aaron's attention to excellence in service is surpassed by few in the metroplex. Great attention to detail.
misleading ad on Open Table
The ad on Open Table for Abacus was very misleading. I was going to go and enjoy the regular menu, but the only choice was the "valentines 4 course meal". It wasn't even Valentines day! Not worth $125 ($250 before drinks for both of us), period. Next time will be calling ahead to make sure this doesn't happen again.
Only complaint is the reservation time wasn't honored. Had to wait over 30 minutes. Everything else was wonderful.
Always Top Notch
I have never been disappointed with Abacus, have been coming to this restaurant since 1999 and it always beats expectations.
Always a treat!
Abacus is a great place for our special occasions and, although we don't get to go often, they never fail to impress us with the unique flavors and presentations of a variety of dishes for all! Kent even came by all the tables personally to check on our food and was pleasant as always. We will return again for another special night out in the future-

This is typically one of my favorite restaurants. However on this night the electricity went out three times. My steak was dry maybe because of the outage. I heard them comping things for some people behind us who were not happy with the power outage. I know it was not the fault of the restaurant but they could've offered us a free glass of wine or appetizer for staying with them through the delay. No one even came to our table with lighting as they did for the other tables
could not be better
we take people to Abacus when we want a dependably wonderful dining experience and our last visit was no exception. the food is always great, the service (Steve was our server and was his usual efficient and friendly self) is just right and we enjoy every evening we spend there
Just go for the lobster shooters
What can I add to the already glowing reviews? Food is deelish. Menu rotates seasonally. Went 1/29/16, and menu is about ready to rotate again. Had the most delicious pork tenderloin with butternut squash bread pudding. Hubby had the homemade pasta with boar ragu and melted chevre. Started, of course, with the lobster shooters. Took a friend with us--his first time. He was blown away. No desserts but no need. Plenty filling. And the bread basket is better than Breadwinners. Seriously. Crunchy, sweet and savory options. All appetites were satisfied.
Come to Abacus if you want a great cocktail selection, great wine list, and great menu. To top it all off, you'll discover that every staff person takes great pride in providing excellent customer service. You will be wowed at all levels. Many other restaurants could take a page from the Abacus playbook.

Very Nice, but Underwhelmed
Abacus was everything you'd expect fine dining to have: an excellent service, a menu filled with exotic or well-made fare, and a unique ambiance. My experience overall was positive but nothing extraordinary, and certainly not worth the price tag that normally comes with the experience. For dinner, my date and I shared the mac and cheese and edamame. If this combination seems it odd, it's because Abacus serves both Asian fare and New American. Suffice to say, it was unusual for me to debate between ramen with lobster or a bone in ribeye. I opted for the ramen and was somewhat disappointed. It was tasty, cooked well, and the ingredients were excellent. But I could not escape the fact that I was paying $42 for a bowl of ramen. I might have ignored this had the dish truly impressed but, unfortunately, it did not. My date's entree of swordfish was everything she wanted and more. She felt it was worth every penny and, having tried it myself, I would have to agree. The shared plates were also good, with the mac and cheese justifying it's price by being of a reciprocally high quality. If you're opting for the New American fare, this is a good choice. Overall, Abacus is nice if you want to go somewhere nice and aren't sure what you want. The service is good, the food is good, but based on my one experience, I would advise that you take caution in what you're ordering.
We've been to Abacus several times and we've never been disappointed. The menu is very diverse. The food is always outstanding. We had a great waiter and the service was excellent.
Always fabulous. Best in Dallas!!!
Always fabulous. Best in Dallas!!!
Our first time dining at Abacus. The waiter talked too long and loud about featured menu items and recommendations. He read the entire menu! The sushi was water logged and tasteless. The ambiance delightful but I would not recommend it .
Food & service was impeccable! Cold by the window
Outstanding food and service! One of my favorite places in Dallas!! We go for our Anniversary, Birthdays and any special occasion. Have never been disappointed!! Lobster Shooters are my favorite!! Try the Chef Tasting during the week, it's phenomenal!!

Wonderful as always!
We have been several times in the past 12 years to Abacus and it is our favorite restaurants in Dallas! The food is always outstanding - as the service with Kenneth is. And we are in walking distance to Abacus which makes it more feeling like coming "home" when at our place in Dallas . We wish a restaurant like Abacus would be in Naples/FL where we also live. But perhaps only having Abacus in Dallas makes it more special.
