Restaurant was prettier inside than I thought it would be. Fish was fresh and delicious , really liked the simplicity of it . Concentration was on taste and I was not dissapounted
Excellent food, rude hostess
We went to 1 or 8 for a birthday dinner. We loved the restaurant but the very rude hostess almost ruined the experience. Horrible way to start a special evening.
Clean taste in food and decor
We were looking for a place to have sushi where the fish was the star, not the elaborateness of the rolls, and this hit the spot exactly. Very streamlined menu with fewer choices than many other places, but better ones to choose from. Think quality over quantity.

For the price they charge, the fish is really subpar. Don't bother with the omakase anything, not worth the price. The cooked dishes were a tad better. Would just go elsewhere in the city for quality sushi. Sad to repor Brooklyn still has no high quality sushi joint, hipster enclave or not.

Yummy sushi omakase
Great omakase and youthful ambience. Service was very attentive. Pricey but a good choice for a special occasion. Not very romantic bc of the brightness and open setting.

Menu changes often but never disappoints. We say we want to try new places but always come back because of the freshness of the sushi, variety and uniqueness of the entrees.
Overall a good experience.
Overall i enjoyed the experience, as i give a high score on ambiance. The sushi was also quite spectacular, especially the uni. Some of the best i've eaten. The cooked plates were not so great. Good but not great. That included: miso soup, outside skirt steak and one other dish that was so underwhelming i cant even remember which it was, and this was just a couple days ago. I do however remember it being 'meh'. The drink was a bit too sweet. It was elderberry martini, but it tasted more like saketini. The ambiance and service was great. I would go back but only for the sushi, and i'd probably stick to the sake.
Always a delight to dine at 1 or 8

Best Sushi & Saki!
Outstanding in every way
This is one of my favorite restaurants of all time. The attention and care put into every aspect of dining here is unsurpassed. From the food to the drink to the service to the restaurant itself, everything is exquisite and unique. I don't dine out very often, but when I do, this is always where I want to go!
Exquiste food and service
Good food, attentive service. So relaxed for a Friday night! Not noisy, not rushed. Definitely pay attention to the specials: we had a yellowfish collar, one of the best table items I had in a long time.

Highly recommend the assorted house made pickles, Burimaka (grilled yellowtail collar, grated daikon) and Omakase Sashimi.
Not what it used to be
I've been coming to 1 or 8 for a few years now, and was always a big fan; it was the sort of place I'd eagerly recommend to friends. But after my latest visit, I'm not sure I'll be coming back. The vibe is still great, and the sushi itself was expertly done. But everything else was a bit lacking. To me, the biggest "wow" of the old 1 or 8 was the numerous small plates / starters, all expertly done, delicious, and some quite unique. It's my understanding there was some sort of ownership / chef change recently, and they've significantly pared down the menu to reduce kitchen / staffing costs. And sadly, it really shows. What was once a unique place with an inventive menu is now just another place to get some good sushi. Such a shame - another underwhelming Japanese food experience in NYC.
Solid Japanese joint. Seems like a modest bar from the outside, then you round the corner and it opens up into a white, chic dining room. We felt transported. Food was awesome, super fresh. Server was new, but really nice. Overall very nice experience.
Best sushi in Brooklyn
Go to sit at the sushi bar for chef's Kazu Omakase delight. Can't go wrong.
Best sushi I've ever had
My boyfriend has been going here for years and he introduced me to the place two years ago when we started dating. The food is always fresh, incredibly delicious, and plated artfully. Try the red miso soup - it's incredible. We come here for every special occasion or whenever we're in the mood for top notch sushi. The staff is friendly, competent, and knowledgable of their fare. If you want to try something new, just ask a staff member and they'll have a good suggestion.
The food is outstanding. The sushi is always fresh with a wide variety of new and different choices. The service is knowledgable and friendly.
As an Asian who used to live in Japan for 4 years
One of those places charges a lot of money for making the portion so small with pretty enough presentation. Just too expensive for what it is and the interior is already getting old, so I am not getting those 'fancy' feeling for what I am paying either. Sushi/Sashimi didn't feel that fresh. (well, of course, better than those chinese or korean owned sushi restaurants!)
Celebrated my birthday at 1 or 8 and it was perfect. The staff here were very professional yet calm, relaxed, and unobtrusive. The sake bottles as recommended by our waiter was a great match for the mood and the food was excellent, right down to the sauces. Everything tasted so fresh, and the presentation was clean and unfussy. Seating was plentiful and we had so much fun that we hardly even noticed the other guests.
Get the omakasa and seared scallop with sea urchin. Drinks were also good. Was really happy with our experience here and will be back.
The food and service at 1 or 8 is amazing. I had a great expirince, and would highly recommend it. The food is really fresh and the wine list great.
Excellent food & Pretentious service
Excellent food and drink pairing. Sushi was fresh and delish. My wife and I went here for some late night dining and we were pleasantly satisfied. Our waitress however, had a particular snobbish attitude that made one feel badly for not being a millionaire/ trust fund hipster who should order everything on the menu.
incredibly special and beautiful meal!
My night at 1 or 8 was absolutely perfect! The food was beautiful and sophisticated yet accessible and not pretentious. Same can be said about the staff-- knowledgeable, friendly, and attentitive. Cocktails were superb, and the bartender offered sake recommendations to pair with our bento boxes that ended up spot on.
I always love the $50 Omakase!
Great Omakase plus a good sake selection! I have been here serval times and I am never disappointed! Great for dates or special events! It is a bit hard to spot from the street so don't worry about going in to what looks like an empty bar.
Inventive food, atmosphere, beverages ++
This place was awesome. Food was even better than I expected, very creative. I feel like I had something that was at once traditionally Japanese and new. Ambiance is fantastic. Sculptural and 2 dimensional art on the inside is great coupled with a very clean, almost all white setting. Pretty much, if you love great food, highly recommend.
A real find
I honestly don't know how I missed out on this place for the last 4 years since it opened. Only recently have I heard a buzz about it from various friends. From the moment we walked in the door we knew we were in for a treat. From the hostess to the delivery of the check everything was spot on. Ambiance, servers, sushi chef uniforms, decor, and of course...the main event. The food was out of this world. Will be going again very soon. Especially since I left my umbrella there.
With a lot of experience on the left coast I am admittedly a sushi snob. With specials like Golden-eye Snapper and standards like the amazing shrimp dumplings I was pleasantly surprised. If you like sushi, this is your place!
Very polite staff, food is amazing, although it is a bit pricey. But, if you like sushi, this is a place to go!

1 and 8 doesn't hit the mark. The sushi is decent quality but the quality does not justify the price. The special nigiri are worth trying. Was wow'ed by the pike mackerel. However, a restaurant with this reputation should have every piece of Nigiri be delicious not just the most expensive pieces. It does not hold a candle to Blue Ribbon Sushi, Sushi Yasuda, or Sushi Azabu. However, in Williamsburg it is the most high end sushi. I still prefer Bozu, just because it is not trying to be something it is not. Bozu is always fun, the fish is fresh, and the price is right.
Inconsistent quality of food
The fish at 1 or 8 is not universally excellent. Bright spots were the uni, fluke carpaccio, and anago. Tuna, salmon, and yellowtail were mediocre. Soba side dish was the highlight of the entire meal. Reasonably priced for the area. Service mostly efficient and helpful, though they ignored my friend's raised hand when her sushi arrived without wasabi or ginger. Once I raised my hand, they came right over. Not a standout sushi experience overall, and it's not likely I will return.
I have to say the good is fantastic and service was spot on. Love the presentation of food and the funky sushi selection the make highly recommend the salmon and mozzarella role
I've been to several high-end sushi restaurants in NYC, but the consistency and presentation is never as good as here. The chefs are also very friendly and knowledgeable if you choose to engage them at the sushi bar.
Behind a nondescript door is the gorgeous large white space. Wonderful Japanese food. Always like to come back
This place is so good.
The staff is so nice, especially the bartender. He was very thorough in explaining the different types of sake. The sushi was really fresh and amazing. Will definitely be coming back here again!
nice decor, quality japanese food
The all white decor was very nice, service was very good. We had the dumplings, pretty good, the croquettes, not eventful, the tuna tartar, ok, the fluke carpaccio was outstanding. For main, the nigiri were very good, the fish of the day was good, the tempura, ok, the skirt steak, pretty good. will definitely return.

Amazing every time
Great everything. Highly recommended. Very consistent high quality.
Long ride for a short slide
Traveled from the UWS having heard about the "sublime" sushi from someone who frequents this place. Big disappointment for everyone. There are better places right in our neighborhood where you can get phenomenal sushi at the same outrageous prices that 1or 8 charges and not have to travel. Sushi of Gari for example or if you can go downtown Tomoe is a great option. We will not return.
